Biography

Northern Ireland’s James Nesbitt served as a constable with the Royal Ulster Constabulary, and was an outstanding discus thrower. He won the Northern Ireland title 12 times between 1935-50, and was also the shot, javelin and decathlon champion. After coming close to winning the discus at the British Police Championship four times in the latter part of the 1930s, he eventually won the title after the war, in 1948. At the AAA Championships, Nesbitt was second in the decathlon in 1937, third in the discus in 1939 and runner-up in 1946 and 1947, to Dutchman Jan Brasser both times.
