After finishing ninth in the 1924 International Cross-Country, he was included in the team for the Olympic Games. In a race run in exceptional heat, only Ernie Harper of the five British entries complete the course, but Sewell managed to reach the stadium before collapsing in a coma, from which he recovered. His best performance on the track was to win the 1924 Northern 10 miles.
