Biography

Long-distance runner Lachie Stewart represented both his native Scotland and Great Britain during his career. Stewart’s running potential was first noticed whilst he was at secondary school, with him then training with his local running club before joining the Shettleston Harriers in Glasgow. In 1966 he finished third in the 3,000 metres steeplechase at the AAA Championships. One year later Stewart finished third again at the championships, this time running the 6 miles.

In 1970 Stewart was selected to represent Scotland in the 10,000 metres at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. At the Games he went on to win gold, beating the pre-race favourite Ron Clarke of Australia in a closely run race. Stewart also represented Scotland at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, and the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Stewart finished second in the 10,000 metres to Dave Bedford at the 1972 AAA Championships, with both men earning a place on the British Olympic team for the München Games. Stewart’s Games, however, were disappointing after finishing sixth in his heat with only the fastest four athletes qualifying for the final. Away from athletics Stewart worked as a dental technician for 44 years. He was inducted into both the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame (2015) and the Scottish Athletics Hall of Fame (2018).

Personal Best: 10000 – 28:11.71 (1970).
