Biography

East German 800 runner Detlef Wagenknecht finished sixth at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. He participated at the 1983 Worlds, and the 1978 and 1982 Europeans, with limited success. At the World Cup he finished third (1981) and fourth (1985), also placing second at the 1983 European Cup. At the 1981 European Indoors Wagenknecht placed fifth. Nationally he won five outdoor and two indoor titles in East Germany. Wagenknecht studied economics in Berlin and later worked as a freelance insurance and finance broker.

Personal Best: 800 – 1:44.81 (1981).
