Biography

Kaare Engebretsen played as a forward for the club Mercantile in Kristiania (now Oslo). He won the Norwegian cup championship in 1912 and scored one goal in the final against Fram Larvik. In the following year Engebretsen reached the final again with Mercantile but lost to Odd Grenland. In 1921 he transferred to the club Lyn, also in Kristiania.

At the 1912 Olympic Games he was an unused substitute. He had his début for the national team in 1913 in a 9-0 defeat against Sweden in Stockholm. Until 1920 he played regularly in Norway’s international matches scoring eight goals in 20 matches. He won his last cap in June 1920, again in a defeat against Sweden. Two months later, he was again an unused substitute in his second Olympics in Antwerpen. Engebretsen had the reputation to be the first player of the Norwegian national team who was substituted, when he was replaced at half-time in a friendly against Denmark in 1919. In the same year he scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 away victory against Norway.

Engebretsen worked as a clerk and later as wholesaler. He had two children with his wife Sigrun (née Müller)
