Biography

Middle-distance runner Gaby Lesch reached the semifinals of the 800 at 1988 Seoul Olympics, but did not qualify for the final. At the 1989 World Indoors Lesch placed fifth and she won a bronze medal at the 1988 European Indoors. She also won West German titles in the 800 in 1988-90, with the 3x800 relay in 1989, and indoors in the 800.

In 1992 Lesch married her coach and lawyer Dirk Sewing. Her sister Iris was a national successful 200 sprinter. In 1991 and 1992 she was the active athlete’s speaker for the German Track and Field Association DLV and was criticized in 1993 for the evaluation of the doping problem within the association.

Personal Best: 800 – 1:59.24 (1991).
