Gustaf Holmström played as a goalkeeper for HIFK in Helsinki from 1908-13. With HIFK he won silver at the Finnish championship in 1912. He was goalkeeper in the first ever international match of Finland’s national team. It was to remain his only cap. At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, he was reserve goalkeeper behind August Syrjäläinen.
After graduating from high school Holmström became proofreader for the Swedish-language Dagens Tidning newspaper in Helsinki. From 1913 he worked consecutively as a journalist for Dagens Tidning (1913-14), Dagens Press (1914-19) and Hufvudstadsbladet (1919-21). For the latter he then became parliamentary editor. Additionally, Holmström edited the railway workers’ newspaper Signalen (1917-18), the scout newspaper Scoutposten (1918–19) and later the newspaper of the sports club Helsingfors kamraterna (1928-29). In 1927, he edited the HIFK 30th anniversary publication. Gustaf Holmström was married to Anna Charlotta (née Eriksson) with whom he had two children.
