Leonid Smirnov started his football career with the club Bykovo (1905-08), then played for SKS (1909-10) before he joined the Moscow branch of the club Union (1911-14, 1918-22). He was an unused reserve as a forward at the 1912 Olympic Games. After the Olympics, he won two caps playing Norway and Hungary both in 1912.
Smirnov came from a family of clerics, as both his father and grandfather were Archpriests of the Russian Orthodox Church. He worked as an editor for “Futbol”, one of the first football weeklies in Russia.
