Biography

Although he never won an England amateur cap, Brian Wakefield went to the 1960 Roma Olympics as second choice goalkeeper to Mike Pinner but never got a game. The two men played against other in the 1953, 1954 and 1955 Varsity matches and Wakefield went on to win a further Blue in 1956. He was appointed secretary of the Oxford University AFC in 1955 and the following year was appointed captain. Wakefield attended Stretford Grammar School and St Edmund Hall at Oxford. He played for the top amateur sides Pegasus and Corinthian-Casuals. He later became a vice president of the club and also player and then manager of the Corinthian-Casuals Schools XI which was a team of veterans and ex-players who maintained matches against schools around the country. He managed Corinthian-Casuals in the Isthmian league Division Two in 1979-80 but with little success, He signed amateur forms temporarily for Leyton Orient in 1960 and in 1965 had a spell at Kingstonian. A former schoolteacher, he retired to Surrey.
