Rainer Schubert began his athletic career in Württemberg starting for TSV Laichingen and TSV Süßen. In the early 60s he moved to München for his studies and started there for TSV 1860. He graduated shortly before the 1968 Olympics and by 1972 had his own construction company.

He was a four-time German champion in 1965, and 1967-69. At the 1968 Olympics he set a European record with 49.15 in the heat, but he placed only seventh in the final. At München in 1972 Schubert improved to fifth place.
