Biography

High jumper Gunther Spielvogel placed seventh at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He was also qualified for the 1972 München Games but could not start due to an injury. He also competed in the European Championships in 1966 and 1971. In 1971 he was West German champion and in 1964 and 1967-69 West German indoor champion. He later collected several medals at international masters championships.

Spielvogel trained as an industrial clerk and then studied at the German Sport University in Köln (Cologne), which he completed in 1973. Subsequently, he became a sports teacher at the Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium in Bensberg. During his sports studies Spielvogel also played volleyball and squash in the First Bundesliga. He was later also a youth officer for his home club TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen. His brother Werner was also a high jumper.

Personal Best: HJ – 2.18 (1971).
