Biography

Iraklis Sakellaropoulos was a Greek long-distance runner who competed during the 1910s and 1920s. Sakellaropoulos finished second in the five-mile race at the 1910 Panhellenic Games before winning the event the following year. In 1912 he finished in second place once again, with the race being used as the selection process for the upcoming Olympics. At the Stockholm Games he ran in the marathon, which became infamous for being run in extreme heat, with Sakellaropoulos finishing 26th out of the 34 finishers. After World War I he ran in the marathon at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics, this time finishing 32nd. Sakellaropoulos competed at his third and final Olympics at the 1924 Paris Games, once again running in the marathon. He failed to finish the course, however, withdrawing from the race at some point between the 22nd and 23rd kilometre mark.
