Biography

Magda Paulányi started her sports in 1961 at Corvin Mátyás high school. As an athlete, she first appeared as a shot putter for BRESC, then in 1965 she became an athlete of the Bp. Honvéd, where she took up the javelin. She won the national championship in javelin throw twice, first in 1970, and again in 1972. In addition she also won ten more championships in team competitions. Between 1968 and 1972 she appeared in the Hungarian national team 14 times. At the 1969 European Championships in Athens, Paulányi won a silver medal behind Angéla Németh. Due to this result she placed third in the election for the best female athlete of the year in Hungary, behind Angéla Németh and Andrea Gyarmati. In 1970 Paulányi finished second at the Turin Universiade. At the 1972 München Olympics she finished in 11th place, significantly below her personal best. In 1973 an elbow injury hindered her and in 1974 her daughter was born and after that she did not achieve any significant results. In 1977 Paulányi obtained a coaching certificate at the College of Physical Education and worked as a coach. In the 1990s she worked as a sports manager, as President of the Bp. Volán, then Open Sport Club. She was also a member of the presidency of the Budapest Athletic Association.
