Biography

László Barsi (at that time Tomaschek) started sport on medical advice in 1924. That year, in his first race, he ran 52.6 in the 400m. He then set national record four times on his favorite track. From then on, he was one of the most well-known Hungarian athletes for almost a decade. He was successful in many major international competitions against many famous foreign runners. In 1932, as the best Hungarian athlete, he was invited to the American indoor track and field competition in recognition of his abilities. During his career he won 14 championships from 400m to 1500m and participated in the Amsterdam Olympics. In 1929 he officially changed his name to Barsi. After World War II, he held positions in the Hungarian AA, and then, in the 1950s, worked as a successful coach at Bp. Honvéd.

Personal Bests: 400 – 48.3 (1934); 800 – 1:53.4 (1931).
