Biography

Maria Vittoria Trio was an Italian long jumper. Very tall, at 180 cm, she started competing in the early 1960s with Libertas Torino in her native city. She set the first of six Italian records on 2 June 1964 in Torino with 6.12 m. She twice improved it later that year with 6.14 on 24 August at Belluno and 6.26 on 20 September at Zagreb. A year later, after equaling the mark with 6.26 on 2 June, she improved it to 6.27 at Rio de Janeiro on 22 September, while her last record was set on 24 September 1967 at Torino with 6.52. This mark remained the Italian record for 18 years, when the Olympian Antonella Capriotti equaled it on 4 May 1985 at Formia and finally bettered it three months later with 6.56 at Moskva.

Trio won two Italian titles, in 1965 (6.03) and 1968 (6.48). Internationally she reached the final at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics when barely 17-years-old. He finest international result was the gold medal at the 1967 Mediterranean Games with 6.13 m. She did not compete at the 1966 European Championships in Budapest because, like many athletes, she refused the gender verification test and in 1968, before the Mexico Olympics, she retired from competition. Trio earned 12 international caps from 1963-68.

Personal Best: LJ – 6.52 (1967).
