Colbachini specialized in the 110 metre hurdles. He won four Italian titles in 1911-12 and 1919-20 and set eight Italian national records, improving from 16.2 to 15.2, achieved in Milano on 25 July 1920. This result was Italian record for 9 years until it was equaled by Giacomo Carlini. Colbachini competed at the 1912 and 1920 Olympic Games; in both cases he was eliminated in semifinal.

After retirement from sporting and military activities, Colbachini became an entrepreneur, founding IVG SpA, a world leader in the manufacture of low- and medium-pressure industrial rubber hoses for different applications. In 2018 the renovated athletic stadium in Padova was named in his honor.
