Biography

John Daukom Polos was a native Murut, a native indigenous group on North Borneo, and was from the Malaysian member state of Sabah. He was the first Murut athlete to compete at the Olympic Games. He learned to run as a child when he had to walk and run the eight km to and from school each day. He had no running shoes at the start until he was sponsored by OKK Haji Hanafiah Toyong. Daukom joined the Malaysian Police Force in September 1957, retiring in 1993 as a sub-inspector. For his service to the nation he was named a Datuk by the Malaysian Head of State Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Ahmadshah bin Abdullah.
