Biography

Khoo Chong Beng was a race walker who competed at the 1976 Montréal Olympics in the 20 km event. He won gold in that event at the 1971 and 1977 Southeast Asian Games and won a bronze medal in the 20 km walk at the 1978 Asian Games. Khoo also won gold in the 20 km walk at the 1973 Asian Championships.

The third of seven children, Khoo came from a poor family and dropped out of school at age 16, and walked to Kuala Lumpur to reduce the burden on his family. He worked there as a hospital attendant while training for race walking. In 1975 Khoo spent three months in Brighton, England, training with top race walkers. He retired in late 1979.
