Dutch athlete Willem Winkelman trained by walking from his home in Delfshaven to his job in the nearby city centre of Rotterdam each day. Winkelman produced good results in racewalking that eventually led to the Royal Dutch Athletics Federation selecting him to compete at the 1908 London Olympics. At the Games he competed in the 3,500 metres and 10 miles race walks but did not progress from the heats in either. Winkelman lived a long life, celebrating his 100th birthday in July 1987. He died just a few days short of what would have been his 103rd birthday, becoming the last known survivor of the 1908 Olympics.
