Biography

Dutch track and field athlete Jan Zeegers was a champion middle and long-distance runner who won more than 40 national titles during his career. Zeegers won his first titles in 1922 with victories in the 1,500 metres and the 5,000 metres. He then went on to dominate distance running in the Netherlands for more than a decade, winning titles in the 1,500 metres (1924–33), 5,000 metres (1923–33, 1938), 10,000 metres (1930–31, 1933, 1937–38), and cross-country race (1923–25, 1927–33, 1936–38). To go along with all his wins he also set more than 35 Dutch records in the process. Early in his career Zeegers ran in both the 1,500 and 5,000 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics but did not progress from the heats in either race. He returned to the Olympics for the Amsterdam Games in 1928, once again running in the 1,500 metres. His brother Guus also ran in the same race, as well as the 800 metres in Amsterdam.

Personal Bests: 1500 – 4:08.4 (1933); 5000 – 15:16.4 (1932); 3000S – unknown.
