Biography

Innocent Egbunike was a Nigerian sprinter who competed at four Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in the 4x400 relay in 1984 at Los Angeles. He also won silver in the open 400 metres at the 1987 World Championships. Egbunike was twice an Olympic finalist in the 400, finishing fifth in 1988 and seventh in 1984. In 1987 he set the Nigerian national record of 44.17, which still stood as of 2022. Egbunike was world ranked in the top 10 every year from 1984-88, with a best ranking of #2 in 1986.

Egbunike ran in college in the United States for Azusa Pacific University. He led them to three consecutive team titles in the NAIA Meet (1983-85), and was an eight-time NAIA champion, winning the 100 in 1982-85, the 200 in 1983-85, and the 4x400 relay in 1983.

Personal Best: 400 – 44.17 (1987).
