Biography

Sverre Helgesen spent his lifetime associated with track and field athletics in Norway, competing, officiating, and writing about the sport. Helgesen was active during the 1920s where he specialised in jumping events, winning multiple medals at the national championships. In the standing high jump he won four consecutive Norwegian titles from 1924 to 1927 along with gold in the regular high jump in 1926. He competed in the high jump at the 1924 Paris Olympics where he tied for eighth in the final with Bob Roberts of South Africa. Helgesen also competed in the triple jump, winning silver in 1926 at both the Norwegian championships and the AAA championships in England. After his athletics career he worked as the sports editor of Arbeiderbladet from 1928 to 1973 and served on the board of the Norwegian Athletics Association in the late 1940s.
