Biography

The multi-talented Reidar Jørgensen excelled as a sportsman in both running and skiing before becoming a noted botanist. Jørgensen first represented Lillehammer IF as a middle-distance runner and won six national titles. In 1927 he did the double to become the Norwegian champion in both the 800 and 1,500 metres. He won three further titles in the 1,500 metres (1928, 1929, 1933), along with the 5,000 metres title in 1931. He also ran in the 1,500 metres at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but did not advance from the heats. Jørgensen was a keen cross-country skier and his achievements in both athletics and skiing earned him the Egebergs Ærespris award in 1929.

Away from sport Jørgensen studied as a botanist, earning a degree from the Royal Frederick University in 1932. He then worked as a teacher until 1945 before spending the rest of his working life as the principal of a secondary school. During this time he wrote and published several books about Alpine botany.

Personal Best: 1500 – 3:56.5 (1933).
