Biography

In the mid-1950s, Viktor Olsen succeeded John Systad as the top Norwegian marathon runner, winning the national title in 1954 and from 1956 through 1959. He was runner-up to Systad from 1951 through 1953 and in 1955, took silver in 1960 (behind Tor Torgersen) and 1961, and earned bronze in 1950. Internationally, he placed 16th out of 66 entrants in the 1952 Olympic marathon, as well as 9th and 18th at the 1954 and 1958 European Championships respectively.

Domestically, he was also proficient in the 25 kilometer road race, winning the national title from 1953 through 1957, coming in as runner-up in 1958, and taking bronze in 1949 and 1950. By career he was a gardener employed in both the public and private sectors.

Personal Best: Mar – 2-28:50 (1958).
