Biography

After taking bronze in the 100 and 400 metres at the Norwegian Championships in 1909, Herman Sotaaen won all three sprint distances, 100, 200, and 400 metres in 1911 and 1912. In 1912, he was awarded the King’s Cup in athletics.

Sotaaen competed in the 100 and 200 metres at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, but did not advance from the qualifying rounds in any of these events. He set new Norwegian records in the 200 metres (23.3) in 1912 and twice in the 400 metres (52.8 and 51.9) in 1911.

He was married to Harriet Kristine Strand and had one son. A watchmaker by trade, he emigrated to the USA in February 1913 and took on the name Naess. There, he married another Norwegian born woman, Marie L. Sanner, and had two more children, one daughter and one son. In 1937, he filed a patent regarding clock escapements.

Personal Bests: 100 – 11.1 (1911); 200 – 23.3 (1913).
