A representative of the AZS Kraków sports club, Zdzisław Nowak was one of the best long jumpers in Poland during the interwar period. Nowak was a four-time national champion in the event (1928–1930, 1932) and set five Polish records. His jump of 7.34 metres stood as a national record from 1934 to 1949. He was also part of the quartet that held the national record in the 4 x 100 metres relay. Nowak competed in the long jump at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but suffered an injury in the qualification round and withdrew from the competition. He later became a coach and worked as a PE teacher at a school in Tarnów.
