Born in Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) to a Portuguese father and a Guinean mother Gentil dos Santos moved to Lisboa to attend university. Whilst in Portugal Santos became a champion athlete in sprint events, winning national titles and setting multiple records. In the 1920s he won three titles in the 100 metres (1922–24), four in the 200 metres (1922–24, 1927), three in the 400 metres (1922–24), and three in the 4 x 100 metres (1922–24). Santos also set national records in the 100 metres (1924), 200 metres (1925), 400 metres (1922, 1923, 1925), and the 4 x 100 metres (1922, 1923). He represented Portugal at the 1924 Paris Olympics but his national success did not translate to international success, and he was eliminated in the heats of both the 100 and 200 metres.
Personal Bests: 100 – 10.8 (1924); 200 – 22.2 (1925).
