South African track and field athlete Tom Lavery was an excellent sprinter and hurdler who competed either side of World War II. Lavery was selected to compete at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he reached the semi-finals of the 110 metres hurdles and ran in the 4 x 100 metres relay. Two years later at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney he won gold in the 120 yards hurdles and finished fourth in the 100 yards. After the war Lavery won bronze in the 120 yards hurdles at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland.
