Paul Hänni was one of the best sprinters in Switzerland during the interwar years. Hänni was a multiple time Swiss national champion, winning the 100 metres title five times (1934–37, 1942), and the 200 metres title also on five occasions (1935–37, 1939, 1942). He held the Swiss record in the 100 metres from 1934 until 1960, and the 200 metres record from 1935 to 1961. At the 1934 European Athletics Championships in Torino he finished fourth in the 100 metres. Two years later he once again finished in fourth place in a major final, this time in the 200 metres at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Hänni also ran in the 100 metres at the Berlin Games, with him reaching the semi-finals.
