Biography

During his short career Bertil Fastén was one of the best all-round track and field athletes in Sweden in the 1920s. Fastén won his first of five national titles in 1924 when he became the Swedish decathlon champion. From 1925 to 1927 he was a three-time champion in the pentathlon, and he became the champion in the discus in 1927. Fastén competed in both the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1924 Paris Olympics, finishing in 23rd place in the pentathlon, but withdrew from the decathlon after being disqualified in the 110 metres hurdles. Fastén’s promising life was cut short when he died from influenza in January 1928 at the age of just 27.
