Biography

Lennart Jonsson first appeared on the podium at the Swedish National Championships in 1952, when he took silver in the 200 metres dash. He won bronze medals in the 400 metres in 1956 and 1957, followed by silver in 1958 and, finally, gold in 1959. This led to his selection to represent his country at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he was eliminated in round one of the 200 metres and in the semi-finals of the 4x400 metres relay, alongside Hans-Olof Johansson, Per-Owe Trollsås, and Alf Petersson. Jonsson and Petersson had had better luck in the latter event at the 1958 European Championships, where they took bronze with non-Olympians Nils Holmberg and Hans Lindgren. Jonsson retired from active competition after winning national bronze in the 400 metres in 1960 and 1961, and he later became the treasurer for the Swedish Athletics Association.

Personal Bests: 200 – 21.9 (1960); 400 – 47.6 (1959).
