Biography

A member of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Force, Georgie Lewis became the first Trinidadian to represent his country at the Olympic Games when he won his first round heat of the 100 m at the 1948 Games. A footballer and cricketer in his youth he did not take athletics seriously until well into his twenties and lost his best years to World War Two. He was 100 yards champion of Trinidad from 1946 to 1948 and added titles at 220 yards in 1946 and 1948 and 440 yards in 1947. Lewis also won championships in Guyana and ran a 100 yards race in 9.4 seconds in that country. The time would have equaled the world record for that distance had it not been wind assisted.

He settled in the USA after his retirement from the police force but later returned to his homeland.

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.2 (1947); 200 – 21.2 (1947).
