Biography

Uganda first competed at the Olympic Games in 1956 at Melbourne, sending a team of three track & field athletes, one of whom was Patrick Etolu, who would produce their best finish. Etolu was a high jumper who made the finals in Melbourne, tying for 12th. Etolu was a known factor in 1956, as he had won a silver medal at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He competed at those games again in 1958, placing fourth, and in 1962, finishing ninth. Etolu set the Ugandan high jump record of 1.99 metres in 1954, which lasted as the national record until 1999, when it was broken by heptathlete Teddy Sondota.
