Biography

After leaving school, Gennady Solodov studied at the railway school, and worked as a turner after graduation. During his time at the school he took up race walking, and in 1958 competed in his first event at Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod). In the same year, he finished sixth in the 50 km. walk at the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR in Leningrad. In 1959 he went to the Omsk State Institute of Physical Culture and, at the same time, started working as a ski coach.

From 1959-68 Solodov was a member of the USSR national race walking team. In a match between England and the USSR at London in 1962 he finished third, and the following year won his race in the match between the USSR and USA. Having competed in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he missed the following season through injury and, after failing to get selected for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, he retired from the sport. From 1976 Solodov lived in Sochi, and then Rudny in Kazakhstan. In 1999, at the invitation of the Minister of Sports of the Chuvash Republic, Solodov moved with his family to Cheboksary and began working as a head coach at the republican school of sports walking.
