Biography

Although his Olympic honors came in the shot, Tiny Hartranft was equally successful with the discus. While at Stanford he scored a shot/ discus double at the IC4A in 1922 and 1924. In winning the 1924 discus he threw 158-1⅛ (48.18) that bettered the existing world record but was not ratified “because of a high wind.” However, he set an official world record the following year of 157-1⅝ (47.89). In the 1924 Olympic discus he was completely out of form and only placed sixth with a throw some 20 feet below his best.

Personal Bests: SP – 15.53 (1924); DT – 48.18 (1924).
