Reginald Crabbe

Reginald Crabbe was educated at Trent College and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. During his five years at Cambridge, he ran against Oxford in the 880y (1904-06), the mile (1903), the 3 miles (1906), and the cross-country race (1902-03, 1905). At the AAA Championships he finished second in the 880y in 1905 and in 1906 he placed second in the world 880y ranking with a fine run of 1:55.8 at the CUAC Sports.

A distinguished churchman, his first curacy was at Newcastle-under-Lyme until 1911 when he served as chaplain to the Bishop of Sierra Leone. He returned to Britain and took up posts in Peckham and Sheffield and in 1930 was appointed a chaplain at Dulwich College and was made the Rural Dean of Dulwich, before accepting the appointment as Bishop of Mombasa, which he held from 1936 to1953 when he returned to the UK and became vicar of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight until his ultimate retirement in 1958.
