As the son of a civil engineer, Sigurd Kander graduated from school in 1910 and completed his commercial education two years later. Until 1930 he worked for various banks and financial institutions in Stockholm and Oslo including Sveriges Privata Centralbank and Klavenes’ Bank. In 1930 he was appointed managing director of AB Fisktransport and subsequently became office manager at AB Nordiska Kompaniet department stores, both in Stockholm. Beginning in 1942 he became managing director at Svenska Mjölkprodukter AB.
Kander was a crew member of the Erna Signe which placed second in both races behind the Norwegian Magda XI in the 12 metres class at the 1912 Olympics. Accordingly, the crew was awarded the silver medal.
