Yelena Melnikova was a successful junior biathlete, winning four golds at the 1988 and 1989 World Junior Championships, but was less successful as a senior competitor. Her only major international tournament medal came at the 1992 Winter Olympics, where she won a bronze in the relay, in her only start at those Olympics. She later married biathlete Sergey Chepikov.
