A carpenter before he joined the Army in 1961, Fred Andrew learned to ski the following year and was a member of the 40th Regiment of the Royal Artillery. They were the leading skiing regiment in the British Army and won the Army Nordic Championship six years in succession between 1960-65. A bombardier, Andrew later served in the Missile Regiment of the Royal Artillery before becoming an Army physical training instructor.
Andrew competed in the 15 km cross country skiing event at the 1964 Winter Games and four years later took part in the biathlon at Grenoble. In between, he took part in both the 1966 World Biathlon and Cross-Country Ski Championships and in 1966 and 1967 he finished third in the British Biathlon Championships. Andrew won the British Army and BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) Cross Country Ski Championships in 1968, and was third in 1969, the year he retired from international competition.
