Biography

Active during the late 1970s and the early 1980s, Erkki Antila was a Finnish biathlete who represented Jurvan Urheilijat. Between 1976 and 1980 Antila won eight national championship titles at various distances. At the World Biathlon Championships he won silver medals in the 4 × 7.5 kilometres relay in 1977 and 1979, an individual silver in the 10 kilometres sprint in 1981, and a bronze medal in the 20 kilometres race, also in 1981.

Antila competed in three events at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics with a best finish of fifth place in the 20 kilometres. He finished in seventh place with the Finnish team in the 4 × 7.5 kilometres relay and in 12th place in the 10 kilometres sprint.

After his competitive career Antila coached his son Timo who also competed at the World Biathlon Championships and the Olympics. Antila was also a world leading gun stock manufacturer. He died in October 2023 after suffering a heart attack whilst on a deer hunting expedition in Finland.
