Biography

After spending the 1949-1950 season with the junior B level Oshawa Bees, ice hockey forward Bob Attersley advanced to the junior A level and spent 1950 through 1954 in the Junior Ontario Hockey Association. For three seasons he skated with the Oshawa Generals, winning a Red Tilson Trophy as league MVP in 1953, in addition to a final one with the Guelph Biltomores. He was sent to the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins training camp during the 1953-1954 season, but never signed a professional contract with the team. He joined the Eastern Ontario Hockey League’s Whitby Dunlops in 1954 and won his first Allan Cup, given annually to the men’s senior ice hockey champions in Canada, in 1957. This victory afforded the Dunlops the opportunity to represent Canada at the 1958 World Championships, where the team took home a gold medal thanks to Attersley’s game-winning goal. They won the Allan Cup again in 1959, but turned down the chance to play for Canada at the 1960 Winter Olympics. When the offer was later accepted by the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen, they recruited Attersley to join them. At the tournament he played in seven games, scored six goals, and took home a silver medal. Upon his return he joined the Kingston Frontenacs of the Eastern Professional Hockey League for two seasons prior to spending his final season split between the Johnstown Jets and the Clinton Comets of the Eastern Hockey League.

Attersley took up politics after retiring from ice hockey and began serving as Durham, Ontario Region councilman in 1964. He was the deputy reeve of the region from 1966 through 1969, a regional councilor from 1978 through 1980, and chair of the of the police commission from 1983 through 1991. He also served as mayor of Whitby from 1980 through 1991, the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history, and a street in the town was named in his honor. His number (15) was retired by the Dunlops in 2005.
