Jim “Moose” Barrows was a native of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and started out as a ski jumper. But he soon moved on to Alpine racing, winning multiple victories in the Rocky Mountain Division of US Skiing during the 1961-62 season. Barrows attended the University of Colorado, where he was a four-event skier. In 1967 Barrows won one World Cup downhill, and placed seventh in the downhill World Cup for the 1966-67 season, finishing 24th in the overall World Cup.
After his Olympic appearance he won the 1969 North American downhill championship. Injuries hampered his career, however, so he returned to school, obtaining an MBA from the University of Denver. Barrows skied for a few years on the pro circuit in the early 70s. He later became a ski coach and a promoter of ski events and resorts.
Barrows coached the U.S. Ski Team men’s downhill team for a time and taught a course on the history of skiing at Steamboat’s Colorado Mountain College. He was inducted into the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame in 1996.
