Biography

Terry Clancy came from ice hockey royalty, with his father King Clancy being a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Terry’s career spanned from 1963 to 1975, which included him playing in 93 matches in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1967 to 1973. He started his career as a junior player with the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors, helping the team to win the 1961 Memorial Cup. Whilst playing for the Rochester Americans in the 1960s Clancy was selected to represent Canada at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics, playing in eight matches and scoring two goals.

After playing in the minor leagues Clancy was signed by the California/Oakland Seals in 1967, making his NHL début in October that year. He only played in another six matches in the NHL for the team before returning to the minor leagues. By December 1968 he had joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, playing in two NHL games for them that month, before playing in more than 50 matches during the 1969–70 season. This was followed by a further spell in the minor leagues before rejoining the Maple Leafs in 1972–73, playing another 32 matches with them in what would be his final spell in the NHL.

During his playing career Clancy earned a stockbrokers’ license in the early 1970s before retiring from the sport in 1975. His grand-niece Laura Stacey won gold in the ice hockey tournament at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
