In total, Cunningham won 32 international caps, scoring 17 goals and nine assists. He received Austrian citizenship in 1978. Cunningham first played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) in Canada with Ottawa Nationals, Toronto Toros, and Birmingham Bulls before transferring to Austria and playing with HC Salzburg, Wiener EV, and Villacher SV.
Cunningham later worked with an investment company in Barbados. He lived there until 1995 and was even named Austria honorary consul on the island. He worked four more years for the same company in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before retiring in 1999 at only 48. Cunningham bought a bigger boat, a 17-meter yacht named Gandalf, and travelled with his wife and raised two children. He spent most of his time with his family around New Zealand and later returned to Austria.
