Jan Erik Hansen began his ice hockey career with Gamlebyen IF in the mid-1950s and went on to represent several clubs including IF Frisk Asker and Vålerengens IF. In 1958 Hansen was called up to the Norwegian junior team before representing the senior team at the World Championships in the early 1960s. In 1964 he played in five matches at the Innsbruck Olympics and scored a goal in their 6–1 win against Hungary in the consolation round. Hansen played for another decade before retiring in 1974.
