Biography

Eduard Hiiop was a talented Estonian sportsman who competed in figure skating, athletics, ice hockey, tennis, and cycling. Hiiop worked as a restaurateur before becoming an accountant in Tallinn. Hiiop was also a solider and fought in World War I and the Estonian War of Independence. Following the war, Hiiop taught sports courses and founded a tennis racket repair company in Tallinn.

Hiiop began playing sports in 1908, practicing skating, gymnastics, and cycling before going on to focus on athletics. In the standing long jump Hiiop won the silver medal at the 1914 Russian Games and the gold at the 1915 Russian Games. In the same event Hiiop was a two-time Estonian champion (1921, 1923) and a national champion in the 4 x 100 metres relay in 1918. From 1917 to 1923 Hiiop won multiple medals in standing jumps, decathlon, long jump, 100 metres, 110 metre hurdles, and the hammer throw. He also won 15 medals in weight throwing events.

On the ice Hiiop was a 10-time Estonian champion in figure skating (pairs) from 1923 to 1936. Hiiop was the flag bearer for Estonia at the Opening Ceremony at the 1928 St. Moritz Olympics. Hiiop then competed at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games in the figure skating with Helene Michelson. The pair finished in 18th place.

As a tennis player Hiiop won the Estonian doubles title with Elmar Lohk in 1923. Hiiop also helped to found the Tennis and Sports Union and was a member of the Estonian Sports Central Union. Hiiop taught tennis in both Estonia and Finland. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia in World War II Hiiop was arrested by the Soviet authorities in August 1941. He was not seen alive again.
