Biography

Michael Hjälm starting playing hockey with MoDo AIK in 1981 and played there until 1984. From 1984-87 he was with IF Björklöven and won the 1987 Swedish title with them. He then played with MoDo again from 1987-91 and finished his career with Rögle BK in 1991-96. Hjälm was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL in 1982, but never played in North America. Internationally, Hjälm was capped 54 times with the Swedish national team. He won Olympic bronzes in 1984 and 1988 and silvers at the 1986 World and European Championships. He was awarded the Stora Grabbars Märke (Big Boys’ Badge) #129 in ice hockey. After finishing his sporting career, Hjälm worked as a firefighter with the Ängelholm fire department and also coached Rögle BK’s junior and youth teams.
