At the time of the 1920 Olympics, Edwin Schell was an ensign in the US Navy. Schell attended the US Naval Academy, class of 1921. He became a career Naval officer, teaching for several years at Annapolis, but he eventually was stationed at the San Diego Naval Station, where he retired and lived until his death.
