Although more excitement often accompanies the bigger weight classes, every match in the light-heavyweight division was decided by a decision. The winner was Eddie Eagan, who had been AAU Heavyweight Champion in 1919, and also won a title at the 1919 Inter-Allied Games, though strangely, in the middleweight class. Bronze medalist Harold Franks holds the distinction of being the only man to ever last three rounds against the 1920 heavyweight champion, Ron Rawson.
Eddie Eagan would later become a Rhodes Scholar and would also win a gold medal in bobsledding in the 1932 Olympic Winter Games. Through 2024, he remains the only athlete to have won gold medals in both the winter and summer Olympics in different disciplines. Coincidentally, another gold medalist from 1920 would also win gold medals in both the winter and summer Olympics. Sweden’s Gillis Grafström won a gold medal in the 1920 Summer Olympics, followed by two golds in the Winter Olympics, in 1924 and 1928. However, these all came in the same event, figure skating singles, as in 1920 figure skating was still being contested at the Summer Games, prior to the inception of the Winter Olympics in 1924.
