Biography

Byrle Klinck began his ice hockey career with the Junior Ontario Hockey Association’s Kitchener Greenshirts from 1952 through 1954, although he played one game with the Montreal Royals of the Quebec Hockey League during his second year. After a brief season with the Toledo Mercurys of the International Hockey League he was recruited by the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen and accompanied them to the 1956 Winter Olympics as a representative from Canada in ice hockey. Despite the fact that he was normally a defenseman, he played as a forward for the tournament in four matches, although he did not score any goals. After the Olympics, where he took home a bronze medal, he played for one year with the Stratford Indians prior to returning to the Dutchmen in 1957. He played only seven games that year and did not return to hockey until he suited up for 21 games with the Regina Caps of the Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League between 1959 and 1961. During that time he also played in one playoff game in 1960 with the International Hockey League’s Chatham Maroons and is therefore credited with an Allan Cup victory, given annually to the senior men’s ice hockey champions in Canada. He finally settled with the Woodstock Athletics in 1961 and stayed with them until 1968, at which point they were in their first of two years under the name of “Woodstock Alcans”. He broke the Senior Ontario Hockey Association’s record for the number of goals scored by a defenseman during the 1963-1964 season, with 14, and then broke his own record the next year by scoring 15. He was signed with the Oakville Oaks for the 1968-1969 season, but only played one game. After a full season with the team he retired from active play in 1970.
